How Can I Strengthen My Child’s Teeth?

The enamel of the tooth is the outermost white layer. This is the visible portion of the anatomical crown of the tooth. Tooth enamel acts as the first line of defense against the build-up of plaque and the formation of carious lesions. The primary function of the enamel is to assist us in the chewing process. In our day-to-day life, the intake of carbohydrates and other forms of sugars, when digested, produces acid-producing bacteria. These bacteria then lead to the build-up of plaque which may progress to the formation of dental caries. Due to this, our dental health is affected, and many serious conditions can also occur. So it is important to take care of the dental health of a child’s teeth. Ways To Strengthen A Child’s Teeth A child’s teeth are more fragile than an adult’s teeth, and they can easily erode and wear off when eating certain foods. Poor dental health affects both the general health and also brings down the child’s self-esteem. If a child has any problems in their gums or has a cavity present, this may continue even into adulthood. Such children are more prone to the development of cardiovascular disease and breathing-related disorders. Luckily, tooth decay and gum disease are entirely preventable. Many ways can and will strengthen the child’s teeth. Some of them are as follows: Proper Brushing Of Teeth It is advisable by the American Dental Association that we should brush at least twice daily with a toothpaste that is recommended by the dentist. This helps preserve the dental health of that individual. For infants, a small washcloth can be used to wipe and clean the child’s gums. When they turn one and their first tooth appears, it is suggested that the parents switch to a soft-bristled toothbrush. It is the parent’s job to teach their child the importance of dental health and its maintenance. They should show and teach the child how to brush when they reach the age of three or five. They should be taught to brush in a circling motion rather than roughly scrubbing their teeth. To encourage a child to brush for two minutes, you can either play their favorite song or set up a timer and say that you are playing a game. The parents should let their child pick their toothbrush, which is mostly with a cartoon character drawn on it. This motivates them to brush regularly, and thus their dental health is maintained.

Floss Regularly It is recommended that we adults should floss every day to improve our dental health. It is always said that children will follow whatever adults do, be it brushing, flossing, or doing other tasks. Children should be taught how to floss when their teeth start to touch each other. Kids are mostly attracted to bright and pretty colors. Nowadays, child-friendly disposable floss is available. This is the most suitable for children. Regular Dental Check-Ups It is advised that parents should take their child to see a pediatric dentist. If you go for regular dental check-ups, the dentist will be able to locate the problems that are compromising the child’s dental health in its early stages. According to research, it has been proven that parents can save money by taking their child to the dentist on their first birthday and not waiting until they are two or three years old. If time has passed, then more problems require restorative procedures. Avoid Sugary Foods And Drinks The bacteria that reside in the mouth take up the fatty and sugary foods, break them down, and form a layer of plaque that may harden to calculus, ultimately leading to the formation of tooth cavities. To save and protect the child’s teeth, it is important to cut down the intake of sugary foods and drinks, which includes soft drinks, candies, toffees, chocolate, juices, and much more. Sugary foods are not the sole culprit, but food products like bread and rice, when broken down, also convert to sugar that damages the teeth. Rinsing After Meals It is the parent’s responsibility that they instill the habit in their child of rinsing out their mouth after every meal. This is also a way to improve dental health. The child should be taught to hold water in their mouth and swish it around for about 30 seconds and then spit it out. The purpose of this is to remove all the food debris that is present and cleanse the oral cavity. Vitamin C Your child's mouth contains several types of bacteria, some of which can cause gingivitis, the first stage of gum disease. Oranges, limes, kiwis, cantaloupe, papaya, and strawberries contain vitamin C, which kills these bacteria and promotes gum health. However, dentists say that kids should wait at least 30 minutes before brushing their teeth after having citrus foods or drinks. That's because the citric acid in the fruit can temporarily weaken tooth enamel and leave teeth vulnerable to erosion caused by brushing.

FAQs How do you know if your child's teeth are healthy? Healthy teeth are indicated when the gums surrounding are coral pink in color, are firm, and have a rounded margin. No blood when brushing or flossing is another indication, and they do not have a bad-smelling odor from their mouth. In what ways do eating habits affect children's teeth? A proper, balanced diet promotes good dental health throughout your life. Without the right nutrients, your child's teeth and gums become more susceptible to tooth decay, and gum disease and mouth tissue can have a harder time resisting infection. Why is good dental health so important to overall good health? Dental health is an essential part of staying healthy. Good dental health allows a person to speak, smile, smell, taste, touch, chew, swallow, and make facial expressions to show feelings and emotions. Poor dental health has serious consequences, including painful, disabling, and costly oral diseases.
