What is Emergency Dentistry? Emergency dentistry is a particular type of service offered by professional dentists that aims to address dental emergencies that happen to the patient without any notice or warning. Dental emergencies are severe conditions that must be treated in time and should never be taken lightly because they can worsen and cause some fatal diseases and health issues. These conditions depend on the individual having that emergency and the severity of the case. Something as simple as a chipped tooth could constitute a dental emergency to someone who cares about their facial appearance. When the patient experiences extreme pain or swelling in the mouth, excessive bleeding from the gums, a displaced tooth stuck in the gums, or a tooth that has been accidentally knocked out, the patient must see a dentist right away regardless of the time of day. However, if a dental issue is not causing you any symptoms such as pain, swelling, or discomfort, there’s no need to seek emergency dentistry services. The patients experiencing a dental emergency will typically seek emergency dentistry services if they have sustained a severe injury to their face or mouth that needs urgent medical attention.

Common Dental Emergencies: Some of the common dental emergencies include the following: *Toothache *Tooth decay *Chipped or broken teeth *Knocked-out tooth *Lost filling or crown *Broken orthodontics *Dental or pulpal abscess *Bleeding, swelling, and pain What is a Toothache? Toothache is a sharp and sudden or dull and constant type of pain that is hard to ignore. A toothache or tooth pain occurs when the nerve in the tooth's root or surrounding a tooth gets irritated. This type of pain occurs in or around a tooth. Mild toothaches can come from a temporary gum irritation that can be treated at home using home remedies. More severe toothaches are caused by dental and mouth problems that won’t get better on their own or by home remedies and will need to be treated by a dental professional. Various causes of toothache: Toothaches can be caused by various reasons. Some of which include the following: *It can be caused by a decayed tooth *Due to abscess formation in a tooth (due to bacterial infection inside the tooth's center). *It may be due to a fractured tooth (broken tooth). *A damaged filling may cause toothache *Repetitive motions of the mouth, such as chewing gum or grinding or clenching teeth *Infected gums may also cause toothache *Toothache may occur during tooth eruption (teeth coming out of the gums) *Removal of a tooth may cause toothache (for example, wisdom teeth). Accidental Injury or Trauma to the Teeth Accidental dental injury or dental trauma is a physical injury to the teeth, gums, the alveolar bone (the bone that holds the sockets of a tooth), or the mouth's soft tissue, including the lips and the tongue. There are several types of injury that fall under the category of accidental dental trauma. These include the following: *Chipped tooth or fractured tooth, including root fractures, enamel fractures, etc. *Knocked loose tooth (subluxation) *Tooth jammed into socket bone (intrusion) *Tooth knocked out (avulsion) *Fractured socket wall *Jaw bone fracture *Lacerated lips *Lacerated gums

Emergency Services Provided By the Dentist: Dental emergencies, if left untreated, can result in life-threatening situations and other health problems. An emergency dentist will prescribe painkillers to reduce pain, anti-inflammatory drugs to minimize inflammation, and antibiotics to eliminate infection and relieve other symptoms. Here are some dental emergencies and their treatment: A Broken or Chipped Tooth If the patient has a fractured or broken tooth, the first recommendation is to rinse the mouth with warm salty water to clean the gums. It’ll help relieve the pain. An emergency dentist can also save the tooth if the patient brings the dislodged tooth with him to the visit. A Missing Crown A missing crown may look like a minor issue, but that is a common type of dental emergency that requires fast treatment. If the patient notices that a crown is missing, they must head for our emergency dental office to repair or replace the missing crown. Severe Toothache Toothaches are problems that require immediate treatment. These include another common reason that the patients receive emergency dental services. A toothache may occur suddenly, spontaneously, or slowly build over time. This issue shouldn’t be ignored until the patient's next check-up because it could be fatal and become the cause of a more concerning issue. Gums That Bleed Easily If a patient has gums that start to bleed, there’s a need to seek an emergency dentist to examine the area for the signs of a more significant issue. Knocked-Out or Removed Tooth A tooth having an abscess due to a fall or forceful or traumatic damage to the teeth is another dental emergency that should require immediate treatment. It is possible to save the original tooth by storing it in a container full of milk and bringing it to the dentist during the visit. Exposed Nerves An exposed nerve in the tooth can have serious consequences, so it must require a visit to the emergency dentist because it is usually one of the most painful issues. To treat such an issue, emergency dentists can apply desensitizing medication or fluoride gels to the gum area and treat any gum disease to help reduce the pain and the cause of the exposed nerve.
